well, after the last tour, two and a half days at home and back on the road.
the usual game, but still fun.
i spent the time in vienna with my son and my girlfriend, which was awesome !
then, mnozil was performing at the sauerlandherbst festival, where we
met our dear friend (and complete crazy person) jens “jensibaby” lindemann,
probably one of the best trumpet players in the world.
a short list of people we called that evening:
sean jones, wycliffe gordon, wayne bergerone, doc severensen, ole edvard antonsen
mark gould, guido basso , then jensi´s phone went dead…
i am happy that only one little call (on an austrian cell from germany to a norwegian cell in denmark for about half an hour) was on my bill.
right after the two shows in sauerland, we went to holland and luxembourg,
where i caught a nice viral infection and could´nt breath properly on stage for two days,
this was something, i hope I will never ever have to go through again.
then, we were supposed to have a week off, but i had to go to the studio and finish the work on the new album “almrausch”, as well as the new dvd “irmingard”.
work was done on friday last week and then i had jojo for six days,
that was awesome again.
he´s so cute and his presence fills my heart with sunshine every time.
at the moment, we are doing a weird tour,
traveling a lot in very little time
(vienna-berlin-brussles-faro-lagoa-lisbon-rome-athens-vienna)
in four days.
but that´s just part of the job.
the concerts run quite well and people seem to love the show.
yesterday we talked about where we will record it next year,
so when ever you see on the mnozil schedule a “magic moments”
dvd recording, please come and make some noise, cuz people seem to be scared as soon as they see cameras at a venue!

as you might have recognized, i was too busy to blog for quite a while,
that´ s why i´ ll try to tell you everything right now.
after the japan tour in june, we spent about four days at home, before we went on
the next mnozil tour to england, austria, germany and finland.
this was way to much and everybody seemed really happy to be able to take a
three week vacation in august.
the other mnozils also did the workshop in the xong festival in italy
while i went to tyrol for the outreach festival, where,
amongst others, i got to jam with dave taylor and adam holzman on the first night.
the next morning i did a duo- folkmusik gig with franz hackl,
a very nice austrian trumpet player who lives in nyc, with whom
i founded the “harlemtaler weisenbläser” last april and after that
i jammed with the great german band “club boogaloo”,
which was so cool, that we are going to record an album next february.
the best time this year started in august, when resal, me and jojo
went on a three week road trip to austria, italy, switzerland, france and germany.
It was my first real holiday in years and the time with these two,
most important people in my life, was just a great pleasure.
we visited zell am moos, mals, saas fee, vevey, montperlier,
vic fesensac, limoges, mannheim and innsbruck and i started to do sports again
after more than ten months of complete lethargy.
work really started again in limoges, where i did two concerts and some teaching.
the first gig with georg breinschmid went quite well (for a duo gig after a three
week vacation) and the second gig was a mnozil show, followed by some more gigs and a mnozil folk music cd recording in vienna. (cd comes out soon, called “ALMRAUSCH)
i had to do a lot of writing for mnozil and of course for the roses,
which was the next thing to happen in september.
in june 2008 i met adam rapa in canada, a monster trumpet player and musician.
he wrote me an email in august, saying that he would stay in italy to do some shows
in september and that he would like to visit us in vienna.
well, i answerd : man, come over, i´ ll write something and we´ ll record it!
no sooner said than done.
i wrote some new tunes, especially three of them for three trumpets and
we called those three (shuffle/tribute to bill chase/yeehaw) the “trumpet porn suite”.
the scream team was born – sir bryan davis, adam and me
a wonderful experience for high note loving people.
we recorded all of it and the new gansch and roses cd “resal” will be
ready for release around february i guess.
i just have to mix it and find a record label. (point one is no problem)
after the roses week, which left me filled up with good feelings,
we did some more local mnozil gigs, before we flew to melbourne
for the mifb 2009, where i got to meet, play, teach and hang together
with one of my all time heroes: chuck findley - a real legend!
….and besides that the guy is such a sweetheart….
…and melbourne is such a cool place….
...and the people are so cool….

in this great festival, i hope i will be able to return to down under very soon!
after melbourne we went to brisbane, where the people are treated like children.
i mean, there were cool people as well (becci, dani, d, greg), 
but let me put it this way:
a few days ago i bought a dvd of an action movie.
i was filled with pleasant anticipation for all the tough action scenes.
i put it in the player, got on my hometrainer and recognized after five minutes,
that they had cut out all the fun action stuff and made the flic available for 16 year olds.
i was in rage, I hate it to be overruled by morality guardians,
I AM OLD ENOUGH !
well, that´s the feeling i had nearly all the time in brisbane/queensland
i was really happy to come back to good old “drinkandeatwhateveryouwantwheneveryouwant” vienna for five days
and now, well, surprise:
mnozil is touring again - YEEEEHAAAW!

HI THERE!
well, one third of our 4 week tour in japan is over.
so far , so good.
the shows are running good, the audience is great,
usually around 1300 people
and the concert halls are, like always in japan, amazing.
when you go on tour in europe, you often find yourself on
very bad stages, speaking of the acoustics and light.
here it is usual in every town, even the small ones,
to have at least one top venue, most of them up to 1500 seats and above
and absolutely comparable to the famous european halls
like the kkl in luzern, or the musikvereinssaal in vienna.
i really like being here,i love the food ( gained at least two or three kilos and started fasting yesterday in order to not explode too soon ) and the people
and as a avowing townsman, i am just overwhelmed by
places like tokyo, osaka, hiroshima, kyoto and nagoya,
the problem is that four weeks is a pretty long time and
i really miss my son and T, the other half of T&T...
but thank god , nowadays we are blessed with videoskype,
which makes things a lot easier than they used to be only two or three years ago.
my cellphone does not work and my computer doesn´t seem
to be in the right mood to send any mails through,
so i got pretty much time for other things.
i bought a little camera and started filming and cutting it together.
WOW!
i am stunned by the quality of these movies.
it´s very easy to handle and a lot of fun to get into the directing business!
i have already edited about 20 minutes and started to
discover my passion for filmmaking, thanks to T, who is
an actress and showed me a lot of new possibilitys.
however, i will continue shooting, cut it together and
put the stuff on my youtube page as soon as possible...

i´m touring japan at the moment.
the last eight weeks were filled with lots of work
for mnozil´s new show "magic moments",
which had it´s premiere in switzerland
on the 14th of may.

like with every new show, it takes some time to develop,
even after the first show in order to get "round".
and now i can say that it´s nearly perfect!
if you have the chance to catch a showcase,
do it!
it´s great playing and great fun,
again different from all the other shows we did over the years.

my private life turns out to be great during the last months
and i found a wonderful human being to become the jill for my jack.

i´ll write more later, but first, for all the german native speakers

i really wanted to blog all the way through but i got sick.
you know, smoking kills, especially if you have to do it outside
and spring had to leave meanwhile for some important meeting
with some other place on the globe.
i spent the last two days more or less in my room and was in a bad mood.
but that´ s history now.
this time it was completely different to january.
i mean, every day i heard great bands , thirsday, friday and saturday night
and they played till 4 a.m., if you catched them in the right order.
for example, if you started off at the poisson rouge , just walk around the blocks there.
you´ ll find the garage, the zinc bar, arthur´s tavern (very good place!)
or the marie´ s crises piano bar next to that and you will have a great time.
and i heard joe lovano with hank jones, john patitucci and paul motian – WOW!
also gould was one reason i came here and it payed off,
we made a video that will go down
in music education history as the most important landmark of the early 21st century.
it should be on youtube soon i guess.
meanwhile i joined the green card lottery for ten years and now i hope to get
the possibility to live and work in the u.s. one day.
i have to admit that i am not sure at all about moving to NYC or not,
but to spend half a year here and the other half there, well,
that´ s still an option in my head.
well, for now i just know that i will return as a visitor as often as possible.
and next time i´ ll go with theresia for sure!
now i´ m on the road again with mnozilbrass, today we came to great britain,
i´ ll let you know, how the ale tasted tomorrow…

wednesday i went to the vanguard for two reasons.
to listen to tom harrell and to meet an old friend,
patrizia ferrara-grissett, a singer from vienna who married the
pianist danny grisset and lives here in brooklyn since three years.
well, the band (wayne escoffery/tenor,danny grissett/piano,ugonna okegwo/bass,johnathan blake/drums and of course tom harrell/flugelhorn and trumpet)
played great and toms compositions are just brilliant and pati is doing fine.
the rest of the evening was rather quiet and i went to bed early.
i think i knew that i would need the energy for the next day.
i got up around 8 , changed from my hotel to the acf´ s guestroom
and took the d train to 145th street in harlem to meet franz hackl.
well, what can i say?
we had never met before, but somehow it seemed as if we had known each other for many years already.
we opened a bottle of syrah and talked about life, music, people and many other things and after a while started recording austrian folk music songs in a free jazz way.
unusual but very cool!
we called ourselves the “harlemtaler vollwaisenbläser” and thought about playing live at some austrian or bavarian tv show for “real volksmusik” and watch the people reacting to our “avant-garde jodlers”
make sure to remember our name, you will hear from us!
for the evening , we went to have food at oliver´s bar & grill on 4th street and barrow
and after that, we went to see the absolut ensemble at the poisson rouge.
a very interesting cross over project of jazz and classical stuff, with great players
and conducted by christian järvi.
i knew some people in the band and also some guys in the audience and the night was looooong and weird things happened.
i mean, i met so many people i already knew,
somehow i really start to feel a little home here.
i think i went to bed around 5 a.m. and i saw at least two more live bands in other places
and i met a lot of people from all over the world, but please don´t ask for details….
well, getting up yesterday was not the nicest feeling i had in my life,
but it was ok and another great thing was going to happen:
i shot the trumpet lesson video with mark gould at katie´s place.
i won´t tell you what´s happening, you´ll have to check it out on youtube when it´s ready,
but i can tell you that it´s going to be very instructive
and the right thing to study for young trumpet players,
who want to know all about orchestral excerps and how to play them right.
it was a hilarious, wonderful day with a lot of good vibes and some fantastic italian food and wine (brunello di montalcino 2000) and this time i went straight to bed and slept very well.

once i arrived in the city i checked into my room at the empire, a great place!
it´ s on 63rd street near lincoln center and so i called up dominic derasse, a french trumpeter who plays the show “south pacific” 5 minutes from my hotel.
i met him and marcus rojas, the tube player after the evening show and he wanted to show me a  real, so called “dive”,
a filthy place where they serve the best burgers in town,
but when we were on our way, anders nyquist, a swedish trumpet player who
actually lives in vienna, called me up and told me, that he was in town with the “klangforum wien “, a great ensemble for contemporary music, for a couple of days
and that he was sitting in a bar with mark gould, katie miller and some other guys
and that gould told him :
“gansch is in town, call him!”
we happened to be only seven blocks away from the place, so we headed there
and so i met a lot of nice people right away.
due to my jetlag, i had to go to bed around midnight, otherwise i would have fallen asleep in the middle of that bar.
today i am going back to the theater to meet dominic and some local players,
who want to try out my trumpet and in the evening i´ m going to see tom harrell at the village vanguard.
i´ ll tell you all about it tomorrow!

after the flight to madrid, which i mainly used for sleeping, i changed planes
and got on the big airbus towards new york jfk airport.
even though i am a huge f.c. barcelona fan, i have to admit that the madrid airport is the nicer one. everything is pretty easy to find and
they still have smoking areas within the building.
although i know that smoking is a stupid habit,
i must say that the patronizing behaviour in
most countrys nowadays is a real pain in the ass.
on the swedish tour three weeks ago, for example, it was nearly impossible to get a smoking room in a hotel at all.
“no sir, we don´ t have smoking rooms, this is a non smoking hotel and you are not allowed to smoke on the balcony either. “
you can overdo everything, even the non smoker protection.
in a hotel room, i wanna be able to do whatever i want, it´ s my private environment!
after an eight hours flight, i arrived in the u.s. and contrary to my expectations
the whole immigration procedure was no problem.
i got on a cab and headed to manhattan.
what a city!
every time i get here, i am stunned by the citys pulsating energy and every sound i hear, seems to immediately make me happy.
the metro doors opening, the police and ambulance horns, the green lights ticking...
but most of all i like the new york people,
the very special, wild mixture of different cultures, religions, ideas and dreams.
it´ s new york city baby and i am here again, yay!

i brought jojo to the kindergarden early this morning to have some more time to
pack up my stuff and to have a so called “sektfrühstück”  (sparkling wine breakfest)
with theresia, the wonderful girl i am together with since almost two months now.
it was a little weird for her, that i wanted to go to nyc on my own again,
but i think i just have to do it one more time, in order to find out what i want to do in the future.
now it´s 10:40 a.m. and i´ m sitting in the air iberia lounge, enjoying a well mixed bloody mary and making pictures in my head, how it´s going to be there this time.
i have so many good memories about the big apple,the people i hung out with or played with,the places i went to and the gigs i heard, that i ask myself:
is it really that nice there, or was it just my brain, trying to persuade me from becoming a new yorker by all means?
well, i don´ t really know, the only thing i am sure about is, that i have to do it alone one more time, next time i either go with my girl, or with my band!

the time has come to return to NYC.
my plane is leaving on tuesday the 7th and I´ ll be back in europe on the 14th.
i just can´ t wait to feel the city´ s energy once again.
this time i will make some short films with mark gould,
you know, some trumpet exercise videos, which take a closer look
on the psychological side of trumpet playing.
and i am looking forward to meet katie again and hang out with her and her friends,
as well as i can´ t wait to hopefully meet franzi hackl , the tyrolian trumpet player who lives in NYC, for the first time in person, cuz we never met before.
and i hope to get a chance to hang out with claudio roditi this time,
i´  ve been a fan of him for more than twenty years.
i´ ll blog about what´ s going on over there this time!

while the rehearsals for “magic moments” were going on, sir bernard  o´ mally moved secretly into my flat and now i have a jukebox, filled with old 45´ s standing at home, waiting to be used for partys and on other occasions.
this and the fact, that i got myself a great roommate,
makes me very happy and now i´  m looking right into the eyes of a bright future,
filled with music and good vibes.
apart from the usual problems of a migration process (like seeing no apartment anymore , cuz everything is filled up with boxes and furniture), we also had the very nasty situation of an overflowing toilet twice, cuz I forgot to mention that one water closet was broken, waiting to be fixed next week, yummy yummy…
but what is a broken toilet, compared to the laughs we are going to share,
recordings we will make and the philosophical discourses we will have?
right: nothing!

after the sweden tour, i spent one week with jojo and that was just great!
we had a wonderful time together and he also likes my girlfriend a lot.
you know, he has long , blond , curly hair and at one point he said:
“please daddy, cut my hair, it´s too long!”.
well, i cut half of it and he said : “i wanna have it short like you !”,
so i cut his hair again,
but this time down to half a centimeter
and he was smiling all the time, expecting something wonderful to happen.
but then he saw his new look in the mirror and started crying and screaming
“i don´t want it so short , i want long hair again!!!”,
i have to admit, that i had to fight very hard not to laugh.
i held him tight and cheered him up as much as possible

and after a while it was ok again and the hair will grow again, maybe not mine, but his…
at the moment i´m on the road for three gigs with mnozil, the first two went well and tonight is the third one in belgium and
within the next days professor o´mally is moving in with me and
i´ m looking forward to the new situation, cuz
it´s been a weird time.
my family split up and my son lives now with somebody i do not trust at all.
this bothered me for a long time now, although i got a wonderful
relation ship with a beautiful lady, the anger won´t disappear and i fear
that it will stay like that for some more time.
maybe i should carry my feelings to a therapist,
but for now,

the sweden tour is coming to an end today after eight shows and one day off
and on the free day we worked more than on the concert days,
cuz we have to rehearse urgently for the new show “magic moments”.
the tour was a very successful, we played very good every day since malmö
and the halls were all great , also the food and drinks,
i think i gained at least six pounds….
but you only live twice, so i do not care about it too much
and the time to lose weight again is coming soon.
tonight is the last show in pitea and very early tomorrow we leave for munich.
there will be two more shows in germany before i go back home on monday.
i can´ t wait to see my son again!
i only talked to him once very shortly on skype and i really miss him a lot!
once i´ m in vienna, i will prepare the flat for my roommate bernie o´ malley ,
who moves in with me in two weeks.
this will be the funniest shared-flat of my life i guess.
we already planned to make a weekly podcast, live from the 7th district
called “künstlergespräche” .
we will invite special guests and talk about music
and we will always record this around 3 a.m.
among our guests will be such fine gentlemen like professor paul (yes, THE professor paul!),
roland neuwirth (a viennese legend) and the austrian author franzobel.

during the last 10 days i think i had the best time in months.
i had only rehearsals and three gigs with mnozil, for the rest i was free.
it turned out that “magic moments”, the new mnozil show, will be packed
with unplayable music.
the tunes are so heavy and there are to much of them already, although
it´ s only enough music for 45% of the final show.
we are all living in fear now!
well and privately, i´ m doing very fine at last.
i met a beautiful, intelligent and warmhearted girl, who likes me as much as i like her.
with the roses, i´ m planning a tour from september  9th to 14th
and we´ ll play some single gigs before that.
besides that, i will be touring with georg breinschmid in may and november
and on march the 4th, i´ ll play for the first time with austrian writer franzobel in the
red bar of vienna´ s volkstheater, he´ ll read and i´ ll play some solo improvisations.

reborn from the ashes,
that´s how i feel after yesterdays show.
it was brilliant!
willi brought me two instruments from the 1st trumpet player of the
renn quintet , uwe zeiser , who is also playing in the radio orchestra kaiserslautern.
he was so friendly to give me his ganschhorn (i mean, it´s my trademark anyway)
and a bach flugelhorn for the two last shows here in germany.
and surprise:
his ganschhorn is killing!
it´s a “heavy” model (that´s some trumpet player language now)
and i always refused to play on those, cuz I didn´ t feel to be strong enough to handle
this kind of horn, but to my astonishment, it seems to be just the right model for me now.
it really takes a lot of strength to blow it, but it pays off.
the high notes are clear and right in the centre and the fortissimo is huge and the sound grows massively in the concert hall.
so i guess, after seven years i will change horns again.
don´ t be mad at me baby, we had a wonderful time together and i promise to
play on you again, but now, i have to take the chance and try out new stuff.
first you go to the factory and have a nice makeover and they will put gold on you
and treat you with the greatest respect, like you deserve it!

and now something, everybody will understand:

for the first time since a summer camp in 1988, i was 12 years old then,
i fell in love with a girl i haven´  t even kissed yet !
a crazy, but really beautiful feeling….

i got up very early to prepare the flat for a music video shoot to the song
“i pee a hedgehog with long lasting waves” by georg breinschmid and myself.
don´ t ask me what the title means, the clip should be cut by the end of march
and then we´ ll release it eather here or on youtube or both and things will be explained.

friday, february 13th:
i slept only 4 hours at night, cuz i still was so amazed by the events of the day
and had to catch a plane to stuttgard this morning.
we arrived in our hotel around midday and i slept from 1 p.m. till 6 p.m. like a baby.
before we started the show, i swung the trumpet case around my shoulder in a very cool way, but i had forgotten to close it.
my trumpet, my beloved ganschhorn as well as my flugel, the killer queen are no longer in service.
i played on a bach, which was quite ok, but not good and a holton flugelhorn which was a piece of junk.
tomorrow i´ ll borrow something better for the show.
here in germany they are all in the middle of carneval right now,
so people just want to laugh,
thank god, they didn  t listen to the playing, cuz it was miserable tonight…

i think that yesterday was one of the best roses gigs ever!
there were all emotions you can have.
the energy was high all through the concert and people were laughing,
crying and enjoying themselves as much as the musicians did.
thanks to the wonderful guests caroline de rooij , oliver kent ,
“the boy wonder”  diknu schneeberger , bernie malinger and clemens marktl
and to all the amazing musicians in the band we really created something special!
you know, if you have the chance to work with musicians like wolfi, florian, lukas,
joschi, johannes and tobias, life can be a real pleasure.
i think i´ ve come to the point where it all really starts again.
i´ ve made my freedom with my private situation and i am looking
forward a lot to have more of these experiences like yesterday.
it´ s astonishing, how much the things i went through have a lasting effect on my playing.
it´ s hard to explain, but there were moments, i really told stories coming straight from the heart while playing a solo.
no more thinking of technical stuff or which chord to play next,
no more stress with “wrong” notes, just  interacting with the others and let go.
it´ s a beautiful gift musicians have:

the ability to play the shit out.

this week i was home most of the time with jojo.
on monday he had his 3rd birthday and i made a little party for him.
it was great fun and he got a lot of very nice presents.
i wish, i would have get a drum set for one of my birthdays though,
but it´ s never too late and so i will practice on it, till jojo is interested
in other things than just hitting it as hard as possible.
on wednesday i rehearsed with the special guests agnes heginger, caroline de rooij and sebastian fuchsberger for the roses gig next tuesday , or, they rehearsed with me, i think that´s the much better expression.
we will sing two  a capella arrangements together.
“ain´ t no sunshine when she´ s  gone and the freddie mercury classic
“you take my breath away” from the 1976 queen album “a day at the races”.
i´m very much looking forward to that!
also to the rest of the show, cuz i got no idea what we are going to play and that´ s exciting though.
some old stuff will be there for sure, but the rest isn´ t clear yet.
i think we will jam a lot on monday when we rehearse and sort something out.
however, it´ s going to be great to meet up and play with the band again. 
and on wednesday and thursday, we shoot a video for the song
“i pee a hedgehog with long lasting waves” in my flat,
starring theresia wegmann as “the girl”, georg breinschmid as “falco”, me as “something we don´t know yet” and a plastic hedgehog as “the plastic hedgehog”.

i have absolutely nothing interesting to blog about today.
i mean, i could blog a very funny story, but if i do that, the joke doesn´t work anymore.

i think i´ m kind of cool again.
i am beginning to enjoy the mnozil gigs again,
it´ s more than that, i think, now i know again what i´ m here for!
the last concerts were all pretty damn good.
when we started back on the 15th, i was still quite shakey on stage
and the band needs always a few shows to get back the feeling.
but now, after like 9 or 10 gigs in a row, we play really f… good!
and it´ s such great fun, to entertain people in several countrys.
they all react completely different and you never know how it will be.
in the end they are all enthusiastic though, that´ s a very cool feeling.
in these moments i know:
i´ ve got the best job in the world!
i can make music and jokes and the crowd loves it.
mnozil brass is a very special thing in my life
and we all have been good friends for a long time now.
it´ s the only settled relationship in my life.
willi, me and gerhard were there with the other two guys from the beginning back in 1992,
leonhard and robert joined the group in 1996 and till 2004 we kept the same line up.
then wolfgang and sebastian left and roman and zoltan came into the band.
practice a lot, keep the fluctuation small and have a lot of fights and after that a lot or drinks, that´ s the secret of a great band ;-)
now i am back in control of my life and it will be a fantastic year, i´ m sure about that!
i met so many great people in the last weeks and i´ m hungry for new experiences
and music, music, music and let me write it one more time:
music!!!
my head is full of ideas for the new mnozil show and i plan a
roses tour for september , besides that i will play with georg breinschmid for some dates.
since i´ m back now, i will update my tour list on this homepage soon.
and of course there is the release of the new cd “hot feet”, which was recorded
live @ porgy one year ago and should be out already.

thanks to the great christoph moser, who died during his holiday in december,
it´ s now coming out and i´ m very thankful to him.
b.t.w., i think that his death changed my life a lot , cuz both of us,
my wife and me have been very close with him.
when we got the message of him having drowned somewhere in vietnam,
it had a big affect on our lifes i guess.
thank you moser for all the wonderful evenings, ideas and i promise to make that one record we wanted to do, you know which one i mean…
for all of you who want to know more about this true original he was,
go to porgy and bess on february the 28th,
there will be a birthday concert for him with a lot of musicians he had taken under his wings over the years.

since my father´s death in 1998 and my first encounters with the dark sides of life,
i thought that there was no sence of living and
that life is just a time we are forced to stay on earth,
till the inevitable happens and we have to face death.
for about six years i was driven by these thoughts and when i nearly had lost
the dangerous game i was playing then, everything changed.
in the last five years, i had the best time of my life.
somebody gave me love and the feeling for what it means to come home again.
i had lost that feeling completely for several years.
and this somebody gave me the most beautiful thing in the world.
my son jojo.
it´s very sad that it didn´t work out though and the demons keep coming back every now and then and they still try to pull me down, but i have to say that, when i look back,
it is worth  the pain it caused in the last 2 months.
the pain will fade away and there is no doubt that once this wounds will be healed,
they will leave a lot of scars though,
but i will be able to see all of that in a different light one day
and scars ,in my opinion, make everything more interesting,
they are the witnesses of your stories.
now i´ m 33 and i see things different now  than 10 years ago (thank god).
today i know that life is the most precious gift and death only makes it a bigger treasure.
whatever happens, there can always be hope, as long as you want it to be that way.
if any of you out there are desperate, just watch the stars at night, or go on a mountain, or look into the eyes of a child  and when you see the incredible beauty of life, try to think of your situation as a chance.
there is no such thing as staying on top all the time,
just as there is no such thing as staying down forever.
it´s just this rollercoaster ride called life…

i´ ve had a great time in italy and i am a little sad that we have to leave now.
mainly because it´ s warmer here than in the other places we travel to now.
the two last gigs here were going well and we saw some beautiful places.
two days ago we played in matera, that´s the village where they shot the movie “the passion of the christ” , in case you like splatter movies, get the dvd!
matera is a fantastic place with a lot of beautiful, old buildings and a famous,
white rock which is lightened at night and looks unbelievable.
yesterday we went to lecce, where we played the third and last show in italy on this tour.
i really like the italian people, they are very special.
the way they talk and gesticulate is just great.
the way the ladies dress up here and the kind of shoes they are wearing, it´ s just terrific!
and i think i don´ t need to mention the quality of the food and drinks…
today, we were going back to the usual tour madness.
we left the hotel at 4:45 a.m. to catch the first plane to rome and the next flight to munich
is leaving 5 hours later, so we could go and see a little bit of the city,
but to be honest: i really would have preferred to go to bed now.
however, now i´ m on a cab back to the airport, i just went to the fontana di trevi and
threw a coin and made my wish.
i hope it works out.
tomorrow would be the 5th anniversary of me and a certain someone,
that feels weird though.
by the way there are also good news:
i´ ll go back to NYC from april 7th to 14th, jubelee!

yesterday evening we played a show in taranto after an over the top travel day
and the crowd was very strange.
i think they liked it though, but they were enjoying it sort of quietly.
after the show the mood-o-meter started to go up slowly, because we went to the best fish restaurant in town, which was awesome and back in my room i had a very nice chat with  “far away girl” .
i really miss her over here.
she ´s going through something similar like me right now
and for that reason, we really have a connection.

today was a good day.
oh my god, i ´m so glad about that, because
finally i was having a wonderful time!
the whole day was good, not only a tiny little part of it felt something like good,
no, i was really having a great time all along.
first of all, i could take a good, deep and long nap last night.
i went to bed, started to think as usual for a long time, but then i slept for something like 10 hours without a brake.
i can ´t remember the last time i slept that deep.
a wonderful exeption after the last weeks.
and i see the future bright and full of chances again, that ´s so important!
today was a day off and we used it for rehearsals for our new show “magic moments”,
which will have its world premiere in may.
we were collecting ideas and there will be some hilarious scenes, i promise!
but the best thing is:
we are in taranto.
it ´s not cold here, although the weather is bad, there is just a slight little difference between minus 3 degrees celsius and plus 15 degrees celsius!
tomorrow we play a show in lecce, i hope the audience is a little more alive there!

for the moment, and i feel that this will stay with me for quite a while,
i ply between depressions during the day and a strange happiness after the shows,
although, when i try to go to sleep, my thoughts keep me awake every night for at least two hours before i can finally rest.
well, today this did n´ t do me any good, because we had to leave the hotel in berlin
at 5:10a.m. to catch several airplanes.
berlin-munich,munich-rome,rome-brindisi, then a car ride to tarranto and then a show…
i wonder now, for what reason i am doing this.
i want to tell all of this annoying tour-pain-in-the-ass stories to my family when i get home !

i really would like to fall in love and be happy all day, but there is no way of planning things like that although i met some really nice girls lately, but i also feel, that the hole in my heart will make it impossible for quite a time, to relax and enjoy  life.

i discovered several ways of communicating with women.
why women?
because i really like them!
there is this one girl, i have known her for quite a while, but never talked to her.
so i started a chat with her on facebook and then we had coffee together.
and you know what?
she really cheers me up a lot and she´s great fun to talk to.
and her computer seems to be full of silly movies.
and there is this other lady, we talk a lot on skype and i really adore her,
but she´s way too classy for me. (and she hates beards).
then there is the ex girlfriend who now lives somewhere on the other side of the globe
and there also is the ex girlfriend of another ex girlfriend of mine and
yes, there is also the girl who likes to chat a lot, but also seems to overreact a little from time to time and the one who just got married and the one I really miss hanging out with, but she lives far away.
i will update this list if someone new joins the chat club… 
i made an offer to a good friend and he´ s now thinking of moving in with me.
after seven years a new roommate, could be fun though.

i got plenty of time to think once again, because i´ m on the night train back to vienna.
i was asked how i would prefer to travel a few months ago,
a plain in the morning, the night train, or sleep here in stuttgart and go to berlin tomorrow, where we play on tuesday.
well, at the time, the question was asked,
i only thought of being home as soon as possible.
now i hate it.
right now i just wanna go on to berlin and hang out there.
nothing seems to pull me back home at the moment.
i just wanna go away and forget everything.
i wanna meet new people and find out, what i have to do in the future.
but i am afraid, it will take me much more time than i thought to see things clear again.
but i also had good experiences the last two days.
the audiences yesterday in austria and tonight at the state opera house in stuttgart were wonderful, especially tonight was pretty awesome, they would n´ t stop clapping and we
had to play three encores and came out to bow another two times.
the crowd was giving standing ovations for al least ten minutes.
it brought tears to my eyes, because it´ s a really good feeling to make people happy
and when i do this, i know a little better, what I´ m living for…

from the musicians point of view NYC still is the place to be.
i´m not sure if i´d want to live there forever though, but to work in europe for eight months and spend the rest of my time there sounds like a good perspective to me.
i think it´s the best place on earth to work on a music project, no matter what kind,
because there are just so many musicians from all over the globe, especially young, hungry ones and i can´t think of a better place to develop new stuff and compose,
it´s the city´s special energy that i love.
i had a look at some apartments already and i think i could make it happen.
if i could manage to stay there from july to september and for christmas and new year….
but that´s in the future, the presence is the place to be for now.
i´ll try to take all the power from that great NYC days and use it now for the things to come.
now i´m spending the afternoon with jojo, i´m very tired and between me and his mother,everything is cold as ice.
that´s kind of depressing though,
but after a good nights rest, it should be fine again i guess.
there´s still a lot to blog, but for today i´ll pay tribute to my jetlag.

after the stunning watts project experience i went to bed really late and, well, woke up early of course , just as i always do, when i have to play.
instead of a relaxing sleep, i had to think.
it seems to me that my head works against my body sometimes!
no chance to get a long sleep.
we met at 1 p.m. for a runthrough and i did of course forget the music at katie´ s flat,
so i had to go back by cab, grab the sheets and come back to the rehearsal.
i was late, but i didn´ t care, cuz nobody seemed to care much about that anyway.
the gig was good though, we played three world premieres for a chamber music line up and modern dancers.
after the show, i took a walk from 4th street up to 61st.
it took me about 90 minutes.
and that´ s only half of manhattan....
while walking, i had to think a lot about my life.
what should i do, how will i carry on ?
well, i got no final answer to this question yet,
but at least, this trip added on some new options to my life, which will still
last some time. (as far as I know)
i am really thinking of moving here one day.
of course that depends on some certain circumstances.
i´ll have to change some things in my way of working, to be able to spend at least four months a year over here for example.
and i can´t do this now, because jojo is only getting three on february 2nd.,
but who knows, after a view years, i maybe can find o solution for these issues.
first of all i´ll stay in good old vienna and try to straighten things out there.
after my walk i rested on the couch for a while and had conversations with
facebook friends.
i´m really getting into that now…
i already met a lot of people from all over the world there, a good thing.
in the evening, i went out to the hilton again to see the showcase of richie.
that was fabulous!

rich is a monster bass player!
after that we went to dizzy´s club and heard another fantastic band,
but I was so tired, that i didn´ t get the name, i´ll look it up on the net and post it in the next blog .
right now i´m sitting in a cab to the jfk airport and it´ s kind of weird, because i´m
a little afraid of going back.
before that i was walking down to times square one last time, to buy some cd´s and souveniers for friends and stuff for my flat.
like i got these film and concert posters, i can´ t wait to put them on my walls at home….
the energy of this place gives me so much power and i kind of hate the idea of going to a place full of painful memories, but on the other hand, it´ s still home to me.
first of all i will change everything in the apartment and set up an adventure room for my kid. i´m glad to have friends who will help me deciding what to do in there.
you know like paint the walls, prepaire a snuggle corner and stuff like that.
and then i will adjust the place for rehearsals, get a little drumset, recording equipment and start making music all over again.
and of course there will be partys!
maybe i´ll announce the next party here, and whoever reads it may come.
or i´ll make a quiz and who answers right is invited, or i just write down a password here, which you´ll have to say at the door, we´ll see….
anyway, thank you for reading my NYC blog, it was a good thing to share everything and i got a lot of responde from some really nice people out there!

what can i say…
day 9 was an important turning point.
but first things first.
in the morning i packed up my stuff and then i had the second rehearsal for the gig tomorrow.
it went well and we finished early.
after that, i had lunch with leslie and then i moved my stuff out of the austrian cultural forum to katies flat, where i can stay now till i leave on monday.
i did some more practicing there and after that, katie´s mom cooked a delicious meal for us and we watched some mel brooks clips together. when her mom left to see the new york phil concert, we watched a comedy show of russel peters on my laptop and that´s something i really can recommend to you, because this guy, peters, is very intelligent and funny without being rude or insulting.
then, i went out to the hilton, to see a showcase of leslie´s friend lauren, a baritone player, but i never made it there, because i met some musicians i knew from the itg conference in banff last june, the synergy brass quintet and I watched their showcase.
at the NY hilton, there is a music exhibition at the moment and there are lots of bands playing and making contacts with promoters and there were the weirdest bands, like
this japanese violinist who said that she wanted to play american and european music in a more japanese way, which means faster. all of her musicians were wearing white, hippie shirts and her percussionist was a swiss guy from the party on day 2.
downstairs i met richie goods again, the bass player who played the gansch & roses tour in summer 07 and whom you can hear on the studio sessions of that time.
But anyway, i´ll go back there again after my show tomorrow and i´m going to hang out and blog that next time…
what eventually made my day:
sandra rose (hi baby!), a good friend, who spoke right into my soul in the last weeks,
sent me to a gig.
at the 5th winterjazz festival at a beautiful club called the “poisson rouge” in the village.
and i´m still stunned by this experience.
i´ve been blown away by: jeff “tain” watts, my favorite living jazz drummer, you have to hear this guy live at least once in your life, the musicianship and power will make your day!  christian mcbride, the number one bass player who´s pulse and solos just blew me away, terence blanchard a master and animal on the horn, full of musicality and last but not least on tenor and soprano, the one and only, on the schedule for the evening announced as  “prometheus jenkins” (and nobody knew who this guy would be!), branford marsalis. i remember when i first heard sting´s “englishman in new york”
and that´s a long time ago, i didn´t even know about jazz then, but his soprano solo
on that track went straight into my heart and stayed on my mind ever since.   
this gig was the real thing,
pure energy coming down from the stage in waterfalls.
it´s not about the songs or the playing of each individual in the band, no,
it´s about the crude and honest, deep and sincere way of creating music together, without ego trips, only four guys enjoying themselves on the mutual quest for the absolute expression,
the possibility of togetherness in a cruel world full of open questions.
human beings creating art, music in it´s profoundest way….
for those of you, who are already getting confused with my writing, i´ ll put it this way:
music is my religion and i was in church yesterday night.
a certain, indescribable force, that will connect all people in the room,
everybody who is there feels, smells and breathes the athmosphere, gets a bit of it and everybody who is able to listen, to open up his ears, his mind and heart,will feed his soul on that experience.
it´s been a long time since i heard a gig that took me away like the one yesterday, maybe 14 years, i don´t know, but something has turned in my head, i think, now i know again what´s my mission in this life.
we´ll see what comes….

today i have to hurry up writing,
because i got to leave this wonderful apartment,in which i spent the first 8 days, soon.
yesterday was business as usual for the first half of the day.
a lot of chatting, practicing and skyping through the web,
b.t.w., i´m getting into facebook more and more, cuz everybody seems to be there.
yesterday for example, all of a sutton, i had contact with my niece sophie, the eldest
daughter of my brother hans. you know, we never really talked, but thanks to facebook,
we now arranged at least one meeting, where we will have the uncle/niece talk for the first time….
the second half:
unforgettable in many ways.
my friend leslie havens,bass trombone player in the artie shaw band , the divajazz orchestra and if you´ve been to the paul anka gig last april in vienna, or elsewhere on the european tour 08, you have seen and heard her aswell, came to hang out.
first of all:
she lives in marlboro (but she´s a non smoker), and that´s about 198 miles from the city.
normally she said, it would take her 3 1/2 hours to get to the city.
well, she drove 5 1/2, traffic jams everywhere.when she finally arrived, we met on 52nd street and 8th avenue, i jumped in her car and she drove to this wonderful flat of her friend, a pianist (forgot the name), right next to the hudson river, which was unbelievably cheap for an apartment like that in manhattan and had a great view.
second:
she brought some girlie vodka, very tasty and vanilla flavoured, which we startet drinking in coffee cups, cuz we couldn´ t find any glasses. so the mood for the evening was set.
third:
we went to this place called “the living room” in east village and there i heard the most
entertaining group since i´ ve come to NY:
“alice”.
wonderful line up (bass,guitar,cello,violin,accordion/lead vocals,saxophone,percussion)
and the best songwriting i´ve heard in a long time.
also very entertaining, sympathetic and sweet,
for example, they killed me with a 1920´s style song, when the leader sang the vocals through a giant funnel. the music was very multi-layered, from old stylish, like i just wrote, to groovy, jazzy like stuff and always very, very good lyrics. reminded me a lot of the beatles white album sound, not like that exactly, but if you hear them live, you´ ll understand…

the fun thing about leslie though, is, that she´s used to hang out and go on tour with 15 men. she told me that they had to share rooms in the artie shaw band and that the guys would ask her to leave the toilet seat up!
she´s a wonderful person who can tell bad jokes and we had a good laugh at the bar.
after the show in the living room we had mexican food and tequila, after that we went to a pub called “the jekyll & hyde with kind of horror furnishings and had a “re-animator” cocktail there. due to my schedule today, i had to go home kind of early, this may seem strange, but we could have been going on for some more time, i guess.
i went to bed around three and now i have to go to the last rehearsal for tomorrow, but i write about that in tomorrows blog.

the seventh day was mainly influenced by the sixth night.
i was sleeping very long and finally got up very late around 2 p.m.
i did not much, besides the routine practicing,
but i did something very beautiful:
i videoskyped with my son jojo and we had big fun.
it was weird to see him in another apartment though,
but it didn´ t hurt as much as it would have had only one week ago.
i bought a little yellow cab for him, i showed it to him and he tried to take it out of my hands from the screen.
that was hilarious and then we started to fool around a lot and he showed me some pink panther cartoons on the other screen there and in the end we talked in our own silly language, we created in the last almost three years.
to be honest, while i was writing this last sentence, i could not hold back the tears again, but it´ s a good feeling to let go sometimes.
of course, i had the conversation with my little boy on my mind for the rest of the day
and since katie, a trumpet player who i became close friends with, got sick , i was on my own for the evening.
another good friend, whom i´ ve never met though, because it´ s a chat friendship,
brought the idea to my head, that i should do something good for me and have a massage or something (not what you think of course),
so i went out, took the f train to the village and had the finest sushi in years in a japanese
restaurant called “yama” and after that i had a one hour back rub from some chinese guy,
which was really very good and relaxing, although it hurt a bit, because the guy was using his elbows most of the time.
after that i became very tired , but tried to stay out for maybe 40 more minutes,
but i came to the right place to convince me of going home.

i mean, the bar was good though, but the live band really sucked
and with a bad band you surely can send me to bed!

the day started out with serious work.
i had the first rehearsal for the concert i play on sunday.
it was in brooklyn and i made the mistake of driving there with a manhattan cab driver.
as soon as they get off the island they don´ t know where they are anymore.
i made it on time though, but i had to play without warming up and the three pieces were quite heavy.
brass players might know what i´ m talking about.
but anyway, it was a fun experience to do some contemporary work again after years.

after  the rehearsal i went back to my room (this time with the metro)
and had a long chat with vienna and in the evening,
well, it was a wild party night.
i won´ t tell everything, but what i can give away is
that it startet off at jojo mayer´s house with a warm up.
jojo and me had beer and scotch and we were watching videos of
james brown, stevie wonder, sly and the family stone and lots of more.
after that we entered the birthday party of avi bortnick, who is a fabulous guitar player
,there were not many people though, but most of them were musicians of course.
the keyboarder brian charette and the singer emile cardineaux as far as i remember.
and the most important for the rest of the night:
the singer and guitarplayer jason blum, a specialist, who seems to know somebody in every place here.
me, him and a very funny lady named josephine bono ,
went from the party to the next bar and when they kicked us out at 4 a.m.,
jason managed to find us another place (not easy in NYC, cuz “the city that never sleeps” is actually a lie!),
from there we went to the next private party, but don´ t ask me
where that was happening, i just followed a bunch of strangers on their quest for drinks.
we ended up in some apartment at a guy named tom,
that´s all i know.
some other guy showed me videos on youtube and i have the strange feeling that
there was a funny, sweet smell in the air
i finished this wild evening around 7 a.m. and staggert my way into a yellowcab.
sorry for my late blog, but I really had to sleep long today.

day 5 was kind of multifarious.
it had everything, from happiness to sadness,
laughs and tears and fun and cheers.
and a lot of chatting with my new webfriends.
i took my time to answer most of the facebook, myspace and other messages,
it must have been around 60.
since my real life has become a little awkward,
i try to work more on my virtual one.
i had an email conversation with somebody,
who was one of the most important persons in my life just a few weeks ago
and this certain somebody has turned in a completely new direction now.
nothing is left from what once started this special relationship.
absolutely nothing.
love turns into something ugly and painful sometimes.
i hope that we will get these things straight again, so we can be friends one day.
i practiced the trumpet in the afternoon and in the evening i drove back to the village,to see jolan, my favorite waitress, again,
but she was not there :-(
i had a few drinks here and there and in the end i went down a comedy club,
where i saw four or five performances,
but most of them were more rude than funny.
as you know, you can´t have it all…
although it was nice to have the comedy club experience.in the end i went to a bar, where they serve hundreds of beers from all over the world and i had,
guess what:
absolutely right, a good old austrian gösser :-)
in that bar i was talking to somebody, who also has split up a relationship around the same time like me and there was a jukebox and from that jukebox i wished to hear only one song, because it touched my heart and made me cry so many times in the last weeks.
“for no one”, a beatles classic,
but this time, i didn ´t shed a tear….

i found a new love yesterday.
the village.
it´s the coolest part of the city i think.
i wanted to go out and listen to the vanguard jazz orchestra,
but i could´ nt get in for the first set, so i started walking around the area.
it´s probably the nicest neighborhood in NYC.
a lot of crazy and kinky shops, a lot of bars, pubs and grills and i
bought two records on the street from independent rap artists,
shake-o blaize and his friend sensational.
so now my hip-hop name is t-boogie…
then i found myself a joint called oliver´s bar & grill on 190 west 4th .
i learned a lot there about sports, i watched the american football game ohio vs texas,
which i didn´t understand at all. and i learned about the origin of the NY jets (queens) and the NY giants (bronx).
and the best is:
i learned all that from jolan.
let me talk about jolan for a minute (i told her i would blog about her)
jolan is probably the hottest waitress i´ve ever seen.
the perfect woman.

she was born in manhattan and lived here ever since.
her dad is half russian half irish, but i´m not sure if i got that right anymore
and she loves people talking with australian accent.
she´s so hot, i think you could make scrambled eggs on her belly.

 well,  i answered that one with “as far as i know, you´re the best!”
and then there was mike sitting at the bar.
that´s the nice thing about this city,
you can meet interesting people anytime anywhere.
mike is the vice president of a non profit organization for mentally sick people
and  a therapist. and he´s a movie lover and after a few minutes we talked about the
real important stuff like the existence or non existence of god, what is the soul and do you believe in it, are there other intelligent life forms out there, b.t.w. i don´t think that humans are very intelligent.
and for all movie freaks out there here is his must see movie:
slumdog millionaire.
i´m going to see that as soon as possible.
then i left my new friends broken hearted behind and went back to see the second set from the vanguard jazz orchestra, which is the former thad jones/mel lewis big band,
which is my favorite big band and when they opened the set and i heard the first chords
from the brass section, a big smile came up on my face.
the set was great and i went to bed in a very good mood.

due to my jetlag i spent a lot of time in my bed.
in the afternoon i met up with katie again and we played together.
we worked on things, i haven´ t been playing for about 12 or 13 years
memories from the time, when i studied the trumpet in vienna.
that was awesome!
like a little timewarp, but after a while, i had enough and startet jamming to my beloved brecker bros albums “straphanging” and “détente”.
then we had dinner in some mexican restaurant and after that we watched one
of my favorite peter sellers movies “the pink panther strikes again”,
which I think is still hilarious!
as i am already in the middle of day 4, what i can tell you so far is:
i practiced the trumpet till a view minutes ago and
for the first time in three weeks, i have the feeling, that it will come back.
this is a great feeling, because i almost thought that i had lost it forever.
the future seems to me very bright now.

my second day here was awesome,
for the first time in a long period i felt really relaxed and good about myself.
i spent a lot of time in my room, chatting with a very new, but also very good friend,
with whom´s online assistance i cut my beard down to a new shape, in order to don´t look like a homeless anymore
and for lunch i met up with naima, the daughter of matthias rüegg (who has been a very good friend once more in the last weeks).
she goes to school here.
in the evening i went out with mark gould and katie miller.
mark is a extra ordinary person whom i was lucky to have met at the 2008 itg conference in banff.
he teaches the trumpet at juilliard school and was principal trumpeter in the met.
besides that he is completely crazy, a living legend and as far as i know, a great teacher.
katie, one of his students, just won the national competition, she´s a killer player aswell
and later today we will play some studies together, because I have to start serious practicing again urgently!
we had sushi and then we went to a party in harlem at kyle sanna´s apartment.
kyle is a wonderful musician and plays the guitar in marks band “pink baby monster”.
at kyles place i met some very interesting people, among them a swiss guy and one guy from germany. after a while, they started jamming irish style with a guitar, percussion, a violin and a piper. that felt really good. 
i start to live again, i breath the air and taste the groove of this wonderful place.
everybody should go here once just to hang out!

my first night in nyc endet up at lew soloff´s apartment.
i met up with dominic derasse, a monster trumpet player from france,
who lives in NY since 1983 and plays broadway shows.
i picked him up after the 7 p.m. show at the stage door and then we drove in his minicooper (great car for NYC) to some club to pick up lew.
lew has to sub for dominic in two weeks, so we met for the second time after
the little episode in vienna, when we played the trumpet in café europa
at 1 a.m. and the police came immediately, but that´s another story.
this time we really had a great time talking about personal things, music, playing and he was very interested in my situation and very caring and cheering.
at one point in the “gonzales&gonzales” we started singing along different licks in two voices while a salsa band played and lots of bums were shaken…that´ll make a nice memory
the “coda” was having food at 2a.m. in some diner around the corner of lew´s flat
and then we went to his place, to talk very low, cuz of the neighbors,
so low, that after a while I fell asleep and my jetlag came through (in cooperation with long island ice tea), so I took a cab back to my place,
which is on the corner 5th ave and 52nd street right in the middle of everything!
to cool for school…

it´s hard to explain how i feel after the last weeks.
my whole life as i imagined it has broken down.
all my plans for the future for me and my family are void.
everything has changed.
new years eve was probably the worst and saddest
day of my life.
the fact that it´s also my birthday did no good either.
i spent the day and night weeping in pain for my tortured soul
and in the middle of the mnozilbrass show in moscow
i had no idea, for what reason i am doing this.
a horrible day.
but since the new year began, i can feel a certain relief.
now i try to see through the darkness and stop to make stupid romantic wishes,
because there is no such thing as a “perfect”  life.
right now i´m sitting on a plane to new york city.
a place to forget and start up my system again, get a lot of good vibes and redefine me,
so i can go home stronger than before and be a good daddy for jojo my beloved son.
i´m looking forward to an exiting twelve day trip with lot´s of jazz and good spirit(s).
so for tonight, i think i will start off at the “gonzales&gonzales” ,
a salsa live band will play there (this is by the way a tip from my dear pal bernie mallinger, a fabulous musician and real friend in those days,thank´s again bro!)
so i will blog here from time to time, i hope you will enjoy my story.

now i know what kind of a place hell is.
it´s a dark and cold place and the little devils take out your heart and tear it apart.

and it is the lonliest place you can ever imagine...

but since i know about that, i also feel that there must be some kind of heaven too.

after playing some duo gigs with georg (they were rather mad) and recording some new stuff with him , i decided two hours ago , that it is time for a change.
this year was way too much stress for me , not only the musical side (just got informed that the gansch & roses gig in minsk is cancelled , which means that the roses tour in February probably won´t happen),
but also in my private life i was going through a tough time lately , so
it just came to my head , that i have to take a break from everything and do something for me , something i always wanted to do but never had the chance to realize.
so i will go to new york for two weeks in january and hang and jam with as many musicians as possible!
finally an old dream is to come true and i hope that i get my head free again.
 whatch out big apple , here i come !

i apologise for the long absence , but i had a tough time in miscellaneous ways.
first of all there was a lot of mnozil work to do , for the last 15 months it went on and on and did not stop , which is basically good , because it kept me busy , earned me money and forced me to change my life completely (no more cigarettes and a lot of reading and sports) on one- ,
but fell down on me with  might and main in the end on the other hand.
i had hard times , trying to accommodate a number of things .
live my career as a musician and showman without losing the passion and fun ,
while being separated from my family for something like two hundred days.
if a band spends that much time on the road like mnozil does , it´ s a serious relationship
and you got to work on it constantly , or you will lose it after a while !
so we did some straight talk the last days and the future , which overshadowed everything a view weeks ago , now looks bright again.
the main subject that came up was , that the number of gigs we do must be reduced and what else can be done to keep the whole thing fresh and satisfying for everybody.
to my surprise, for the most part we all thought the same and when we recognized that ,
a big load came off our minds.
in the last four days we talked a lot about business matters , new shows and personal things and all of that stays where it was said , but I want you to know that it is just great to see that everyone in mnozil lives for this group.
thank you guys!
and thank you thomas bernhard , wherever you are , you really kept me going for the last 60 days , dachte ich , sagte er .
now , with a lot of new energy , i decided to go on a roses cd release tour from february 5th to 12th 2009 , concerts are planned in vienna , bern and minsk.
i´ll update that on the news site soon.

hi there!

after working my ass off for about one year,
i´m now sitting here in salzburg (the place i am looking forward to leave soon)
and write about mnozil´s opera "irmingard" and what lies beneath...

it all started two years ago,when we became aware of the fact,
that we would have to do an opera for the salzburg festival 2008.
i was enthusiastic about the idea,because mnozilbrass is a very fine group
of musicians and friends who have the talent and the guts to do something this big.

we had worked with our director bernd jeschek since 2000 and so we decided
to make this our final joint.
in september 07 the first lyrics were delivered and we began to write the music.
in april 08 the piece was more or less finished and in june we started the scenic rehearsals with bernd and the wonderful choreographer ferdinando chefalo,
who made me feel muscles of my body,i never even heard of before.

to create and work on a two hour piece of music is a huge thing,
especially when you do the singing and dancing as well (and by heart),
but the work was very professional and fulfilling.
and yes,it was great fun too!

the salzburg festival´s organisation lives very well from reputation
and it´s organisation is not very professional though (and this is a very nice formulation!).

we played a good premiere and the crowd loved it,
but then came along the critics...
no problem for me usually,but this time it seems to me
that nobody sees our work in a serious way.
allthough most of the reviews were quite good (only two really bad ones so far)
,they all had something in common.
the opinion rules,that it is no opera,we act badly and
eight out of ten wrote that we can´t sing at all.

well,this really pisses me off,because we sing pretty damn good,
we just use our voices like 97% of all people.
no annoying, opera-like "over the top vibrato".
the fact that for some people there is still a boarder
between "art" and "what mnozil does"
makes me sad.
b.t.w.,in "irmingard" everybody understood what we sang about,
without a text book!
try to listen to any opera and tell me what´s it about after,
without reading the lyrics.

nobody mentioned this.....

it´s a shame that nowadays,every musical or theatrical type seems to have its laws
and you only get to be accepted by following particular rules.

but we sit between the chairs, try different things out,
bring them together and create something new.
that´s just a joke for some people here...

don´t get me wrong,i see that the audience loves it so far.
i also know that it´s just a piece of music on top of a crazy,political
completely incorrect storyline
and it´s not possible to create something,everyone will like anyway.
it´s good that way and you can discuss the tops and flops with people
and develop new stuff with this knowledge.
some of you may not like it,some will love it,
others may think it´s just shit and some will have a lot of good ideas how to make it better,but i have to take the chance to defend a year of hard work here.

 it was very interresting to see the reactions of the guys from the cleveland orchestra.(regards to rich,dave,mike,lwle and the others)
they saw the general rehearsal and thought it was the most amazing thing they had ever seen,without understanding any text.
i hope we get the chance to perform "irmingard" in the u.s. and bring it back as what it is in my opinion:

an exiting piece of art for people who love good entertainment

what “irmingard” is about:

seven princes (including an maharaja , a cannibal , the beautiful prince of melk and
a bastard prince) are wandering through ages and continents on their quest for princesses.
at the same time , irmingard , a bitchy , nasty , badass kind of princess , sent by her
grandfather , a great emperor , is seeking a man to marry and take over his business.
she is carried by her six baronesses and wherever she appears , men abscond from her immediately.
bertl , the beautiful prince of melk gets hit by amor´s arrow and falls madly in love with her , but she refuses his love.
the emperor gets mad about this and puts her and the baronesses in his darkest prison , guarded by his house dragon elfriede.
there is only one way to free the ladies:
elfriede has to fall into silent slumber and that only works with music ,
but nobody knows the right song…

i ´ m well recovered in the next mnozil tour phase at the moment.
yesterday we had a rememerable gig in villars le dombes in france.
first of all we didn ´ t  play on a regular stage , it was a wooden auditorium
in the middle of a zoo for birds,a so called “bird park”.(we did not play “ornithology”   btw)
there was space for around 800 people ,so we had to use mics.
the sound check was bad as always (when we have 2 use mics),
but the weather looked nice.
then the show:
there were mosquitos.
thousands of tiny little bloodsuckers.
every time i breathed in , i inhaled at least one of them !
and then: the rain came.
it rained and rained and we played and played ,
on and on.
there was only one question:
who would give up?
after one hour and twenty minutes of brutal , raw combat,
we finally had to surrender.
the vicious dark powers of nature had won the fight.
deeply hurt and ashamed , with tears in the eyes (or was it raindrops?) ,
depressing thoughts on our minds , we schlepped our selfs back to the bunker (hotel).
capitulation agreements have been signed already.
but , my dear blog readers out there,
i beg you : don ´t loose your faith in us,
we may have lost the battle , but the war continues!

one guy recognized only two days  before the gig in lunz am see,
that he had a gig in berlin with till broenner on july 5th.
it made me mad , because for a bandleader who is writing all the music for the
musicians of his choice , that ´s the worst thing to happen.
but things like that will reoccur from time to time.
i reacted quick and was able to get matthias schriefl , who had to fly in from cologne.
it was very nice from him to come , although he had planned to move to a new apartement that very day.
however , we had great fun that evening in lunz and I ´d like to say thank you to :
suzie , fanny , cosi and klaus from the festival ,
matthias for the great job , florian for his swimming percussion and the rest of the band for being there and playing so hot!
the next day i drove with johannes to scheibbs.
we had to teach at the jazzwoche 2008 and it was a great week with lots of jam sessions.
thank you walter for doing all the work!
whatch out , there are a lot of talented young cats coming up !

here some fotos from the g&r gig at the schagerl brass festival

the weekend of the euro quarter finals i spent in rotterdam.
i was invited by the amazing young ensemble “neos brass”.
they forced me to play solo pieces,which always stresses me out pretty much,
but we had a great time together!
after the show,they organized a little session with a local quartet with the wonderful
portugese singer maria joao mendez .
the weekend of the final was pretty tough too.
mnozil played on saturday evening in sandviken (sweden),
sunday at noon in kleinheubach near (100km from frankfurt/germany)
and at 8 p.m. some friends came to my place in vienna to watch spain beat up the germans.
for an austrian a great pleasure,because they had beaten up us in round one…
now ,soccer is over and i spend one day at home,before i leave for 10 days with mnozil,the roses and do some teaching at the “scheibbser jazzcourse 2008”.
i haven´t done teaching in a while,
so I´m looking forward to it very much.
it´s going to be fun to jam all week!

hi blog readers!
since i came back from this years itg-conference in banff/alberta,
we (mnozilbrass) started to rehearse for our first opera “irmingard”,
which we are preparing for the salzburg festival this august.
after writing the music for the last eight months,it´s a very nice thing
to finally do it.
we work together with the great choreographer ferdinando chefalo,
known from the austrian tv show “dancing stars”.
he is a very sweet guy with a great sense of humor.
But I have to tell you:
in the end of each rehearsing day i am completely exhausted!
we jump around while playing and singing like in some crazy
hollywood movie from the 40´s…
i am pretty sure that i will lose some weight within the next two months!

there is a lot to tell
and now,while i´m sitting on a bus
from calgary airport to banff in canada,
i got the time to write something down.
you might think of me as a real lazy blogger,
but i wrote one loooong blog four days ago,
forgot to safe it and deleted it accidentally.
i wanted to go through the wall that moment
as you can imagine!
but back to the real thing now.
the gansch & roses tour was great fun.
we met in mank at the schagerl brass festival.
i already had performed there with mnozil
the first night and tobiwan joined me for the first hang.
on thursday the rest of the gang arrived and we rehearsed all day.
i had written three new compositions,
one cool medium shuffle for the real "jazz cats" in the band,one tribute to bill chase for the trumpet players and one tune in a kind of "happy sound" intiteled "yeeha",especially for me.
as guests we had andy haderer,who is in my opinion one of the living legends of lead playing
and scott tinkler,a complete crazy guy from melbourne,who plays in the tradition of the late great woody shaw and who´s virtuosity is just stunning.
the next day we performed in munichsthal for the 50th anniversary of the local brass band together with my wife´s band "netnakisum".
that was great fun too.
on sunday there was a day off,which inspired me to
host the first "brunch with gansch" at my house.
it was just wonderful!
so many different people came and left during this sunday and from four p.m. there was an unforgettable jamsession going on,
including the netnakisum girls,florian truebsbach,"hanschi" dickbauer from the "radio string quartett" and myself.
on monday we had the third gig at porgy,
the actual birthplace and homebase of the roses.
it´s allways great to go on stage there,
people love the band and the band loves them,
you can feel that every time in good old riemergasse 11.
tuesday we played the last gig in feldbach,
where only 13 tickets were sold before,
cause nobody thought about the soccer game austria v.s. nigeria,which took place that evening.
but in the end about 60 people came and so we had a nice last gig,cuz this 60 really loved the music.
after this little tour i needed four nights to get all the lost sleep back,but it was (as always) great fun for me to meet up and play with these fine musicians!
the next concert will be on july 5th in lunz with the
7piece line up from january.
after that we´ll have a long break,but i´m planning
another little tour in the beginning of december,
which will bring us to switzerland.
meanwhile i´m visiting the itg conference here in
banff.

finally stress broke down on me.
not completely uninspected though..
three weeks ago,when i already should have started to work on several things
like writing tunes,answering emails or prepare for the party at my house next sunday,i decided to just don´t do any of that and relax for a few days.
just a little "walking in the park" with my son,enjoying the nice weather and so on.
basically a good idea you think?
yes,it is!
i honestly think so too
but on the other hand i knew the hole time,
that payback time was going to come sooner or later...
and there it was!
the last few days were horrifying - but worth it!
when you got no time at all and the pressure is high on you
sometimes this situation makes you create great stuff!
now i´m finished with all the work and can´t wait to play the new tunes with the roses.
tomorrow we start off at the schagerl brass festival with the mnozils
and after that i get together again with my beloved roses for a short,
but hopefully great tour with powerful sounds and lots of fun!

i´m sitting in front of my computer since days,

after all i have to admit that i am only a trumpet player.
if god wanted me to host websites, he would have given me more brain cells

yesterday we finished the recordings for the new mnozil-dvd "creme de la creme",
it was a lot of work and i was exhausted afterwards,
but we were lucky to work with the great director jasmina hajdany
she´s a tough lady and knows how to work with seven musicians and seven
cinematographers!
i think it´s going to be a great release this autumn!

I’m glad my page is online now, so I can blog again…
Sorry for the long delay, but as you all might know, I am on the road a lot

and sometimes I find my head filled with other things.
The last few months where successful musically as well as private.
Besides the concerts I worked a lot on the Mnozil Opera “Irmingard”,
which will open at the Salzburg festival on August 24^th.
The main composers (LEONHARD_PAUL, Gerhard Fussl, Robert Rother and Myself) wrote a 100 minute score for that and now we started rehearsing the first scenes.

Warning: THE PIECE COULD CONTINGENTLY BE RATHER FUNNY

The GANSCH & ROSES future:
I booked four gigs in May, I booked nine musicians
for that tour including three (!) Trumpets to make
some noise, but I have not written one tune yet…

I only can say that:
I will play third tp and that’s going to be high ;-)
Anyway , it’s the perfect line up to arrange some
BILL CHASE tribute….

TOBIWAN,BRYAN,DOMINIK,FLORIAN,HANK,OLIVER,JOSCHKO, MARIO

and I will do everything to bring some cool music to the audience!

hello folks!
sorry,but i had no possibility to go online for the last 10 days,
so i thought,
i should just deliver the stories in a "compressed" form to you…
1st: the GANSCH&ROSES TOUR, PART ONE 2008:

it was a ball from the beginning!
after one day of rehearsing in vienna,
we started off with a "public dress rehearsal" at the pub
ZUM SCHWARZEN WIRT in my hometown MELK,
where we met(besides others)my old friend JACKSON,
who first mentioned the bands name in 1991.
he greeted me with the lovingly words
"RUCK UMME G´SCHISSANA"
and after that,I felt immediately at home!
the gig was great and the crowd had a good time…

the 2nd concert took place in salzburg at the OVAL,
a beautiful little concert hall with great acoustics and that
was of course the reason, why we tried to record the gig there
in order to get a live cd of this tour,but as the musicians of you might know,as soon as you have mics in front of your nose,the coolness is gone and you start to think about what you are playing, especially when the crowd is kind of cautious
and so this evening did not turn out perfect,but we had still the chance to get things right in VIENNA, where we knew,the audience would go bezerk anyway!

3rd evening: ST. VEIT
was relly happening!
apart from the strange acoustics at the
RATHAUSHOF,
it was a gig like it should be!
great crowd,great solos and a wonderful hang after the show,
which left me and
FLORIAN TRUEBSBACH
at the local discothek….(something like 6a.m.)
the next day was supposed to be a day off,but as a matter of fact,
someone became sick,who had to do a gig in KREMS
and they called us to sub for them.
the band was free,so we did it,but it turned out to be a desaster for the
organizer(16 tickets sold….)
let´s quickly change the subject and talk about the next day:
SUNDAY,13TH OF JANUARY 2008,PORGY & BESS,VIENNA,
370 TICKETS SOLD!
that´s the way(aha,aha)I like it!!!


we recorded live again and the band was performing on a very high energy level,i think i can make something out of that,
or in other words:
THE NEW GANSCH&ROSES CD "HOT FEET"
WILL BE RELEASED IN FALL 2008!

monday was a traveling day to STOCKHOLM,
where we arrived around 9 p.m.,had some pints of heavy Belgian beer and went to sleep quite early,compared to the rest of the tour.
to be honest:if i would carry on to live the life i had on this tour,
i would get LACHRYMAL SACKS LIKE J.R.EWING

within two weeks….
the last gig at the FASCHINGS, a great jazzclub,
which exists since 1977,was a last ball for everyone there.
although we didn´t get the place completely sold out,it was great
